Residency
I am often asked by customers about what they will need to do to stay in Portugal on a temporary or permanent basis.
In simple terms, if you want to stay in Portugal for more than 3 months after your arrival you will need to register as a resident. For this you will need:
- proof of address (in Portugal)
- a valid passport
- proof of earnings or evidence of sufficient means to support yourself and your family
- proof of enrolment in a Portuguese school or university, if you are a student
Seeking a temporary residency permit (usually lasting up to 5 years) can be a complicated process, the following website is provided by the Portuguese government and provides guidance on how to register and apply for residency.

If you feel unsure about handling the application for residency yourself, I always suggest you speak with a reputable lawyer here in Portugal to help you through the process. If you need help identifying a suitable lawyer, I can provide you with several contacts here in Tavira (depending on your spoken language).
