Every morning a lively market is held in the Mercado Municipal, with stalls selling fish, fresh produce and local handicraft. Make sure you pay them a visit! Also make sure you take a picture from the Roman bridge! This ancient bridge is a key iconic landmark joining the old city with the early suburbs and a must during hot summer evenings. Often there are street performers. Very romantic at sundown. Good for people-watching. There is a myth about the bridge and why on one side the river has one name and on the other a different name. The mix of traditional Portuguese architecture with Moorish influences shows throughout its roman bridge, Moorish castle, historical buildings, stunning churches framing delightful plazas and white cobbled streets. Evenings in Tavira are best spent at an outdoor restaurant in the charming historical centre where you can enjoy some exquisite freshly caught fish and seafood, accompanied by a bottle of locally produced wine.

The city is on the banks of the Gilão River that flows to the Atlantic through Ria Formosa Natural Park, which sprawls over 170sq kilometres of water channels, islands, and endless beaches, that holds a unique ecosystem and biodiversity.

Tavira’s relaxing and unspoiled atmosphere makes it an excellent location for anyone looking for a peaceful place to live or the perfect destination for a holiday in the sun.

You can also enjoy the picturesque old towns of Santa Luzia e Cabanas, both sitting right in front of the Ria Formosa.

There are excellent golf courses, numerous cycle paths, long walking trails and waters waiting to be discovered by kayak.
